They say that birds of a feather flock together, and now they make beer together too. We've hatched a new series of collaborations with friends from near and far - so take a gander.
“Collaborations help fuel the sense of community that lies at the heart of the craft brewing industry,” explains our Co-Founder and Director of Operations Tom Whisenand. “When we consider a collaboration, we’re all about furthering friendships with people that have similar values, and that we believe represent the best in brewing, whether big or small, well-known or just starting out.” Head Brewer Josh Bischoff agrees, saying the short answer to “Why collaborate?” is for the fun. “We like to work with our friends in the industry,” says Bischoff, “taking the different feel of each brewery and putting a little bit of both in the brew, to create something unique and exciting.”
You can check out the first release from Flock Together, a Belgian-style Dubbel made with Hoops Brewing of Duluth, at the Minnesota Craft Brewers Guild's Winterfest 2017 this weekend. The Hoops brothers have always had a strong influence in our Head Brewer Josh's brewing career, and with the announcement of Hoops Brewing opening this year, Josh thought a collaboration seemed like a fun way to work with an early mentor. Together they decided to twist styles like they do in Belgium - throwing in oddball ingredients like fennel, star anise and agave syrup to make a fun, yet character-loaded, complex ale.
Our previous collaborations feature beers made with New Belgium Brewing and Station 26 Brewing of Colorado, Dangerous Man Brewing and Northbound Smokehouse & Brewpub of Minnesota and Jubeck New World Brewing of Iowa. Look out for collaborations with Hoops Brewing, Dangerous Man Brewing, Gamling & McDuck Winery and Tattersall Distilling later this year.
Just when you thought it was safe to go back to drinking beer made by just one brewery, Indeed Brewing and New Belgium Brewing release their second Beers With Vrienden collaboration. Presenting Strawberry Fields Ale – a kettle soured, strawberry-scented, strawberry-tasting beer that you’ll want to drink, well, forever.
In March, we traveled to New Belgium’s amazing brewery in Fort Collins, Colorado to make our first jointly brewed beer, Come Together Honey Wheat Wine. This time around, we brought the brewing process home. The New Belgium gang met us in Minneapolis this past April, bringing some signature ingredients with them. “The intent of the beer brewed at Indeed is to be more New Belgium Brewing influenced. We decided on a lighter-bodied base, kettle soured with their house lactobacillus strain,” says Indeed Head Brewer Josh Bischoff. “To tie the two beers together, we wanted to play off both the strawberry character from the Belma hops used in ‘Come Together’ and the name itself. Strawberry Fields was born.”
Strawberry Fields Ale weighs in at 5.4% ABV and 23 IBU. This beer is kettle soured with New Belgium's house lactobacillus strain for tartness, and finished with strawberry post-fermentation to complement the berry notes of the Belma hops used in the brewing process. This hazy red brew has an aroma featuring strawberry, citrus and tart notes. Upon first sip, the taste is light and crisp with noticeable tartness accompanied by a kiss of strawberries. Yep, these strawberries kiss you right on the mouth.
